Every Friday I try to think of a post that is related more to flirting and focused on single people. I know most singletons will go out tonight hoping to get lucky. For this to happen, sometimes they have to work their best chat up line, which may sound very ridiculous or so funny that you might actually open your way into having a conversation with the person you want.
When I was single in Brazil, I heard all sorts of cringing lines. Brazilian men love to chat up women. All you need to do is wear a skirt and walk on the street to hear the most hilarious chat up lines. In my old days, I’ve heard stuff like
“You are the daughter in law my mum prayed for”!
If I was wearing something green – “If you are this nice in green, imagine if you were ripe!”
“I didn’t know that dolls could walk”!
And the most popular – “Gostosa” (delicious)!
When I moved to London (and was still single), I was quite surprised about how “aggressive” some men were in terms of flirting. Then I realised that the majority of the shameless guys approaching me were foreigners as well (Italians, Spanish, French, Turkish,…). Most of the time, English men would only use a chat up line if they were drunk.
I came across an article on the Daily Mail that mentioned that the Australians are popular with their chat up lines, such as:
“I forgot my phone number, can I have yours?”
“I think there is something wrong with my phone. Could you try calling it for me to see if it rings?”
“Do you believe in love at first sight… or should I walk around you three or four more times?”
“Hi, I’m doing a survey… What’s your name? What’s your phone number? Are you free next Saturday.”
“Have a feel of this shirt – do you know what that feels like? Boyfriend material.”
Although nobody used these lines on me, I was giggling when I first read them. It might had worked on me if I was still single.
To be honest, what I think it really works is a compliment. The looks of the person using the compliment also helps. Once I was in the gym and got chatted up by an English guy! And he wasn’t drunk! He was very direct as all he said was “Hi my name is xxxx, I have been watching you work out and I think you are very pretty”. Although I was a bit embarrassed by the situation, I felt flattered by his comment, because I always thought I looked my worst when I was lifting weights! So for a guy to think I looked into those good conditions, he might either be desperate or really mean it! We ended up planning to go out another day and then dating for about four months.
When I was in the very early days with Dan, I think I was the one who used most of the chat up lines! I mean, we were mixing between seduction and being polite.
So no matter how cheesy your chat up line might be, use it! I have always used the theory “if you don’t ask you don’t get”!
